Video-subtitle-remover (VSR) is a free, open-source project on GitHub that removes hardcoded subtitles and text from videos on your own computer, using AI inpainting models such as STTN, LaMa and ProPainter. VideoTextRemover is an online alternative to video-subtitle-remover: the same kind of job in the browser, with nothing to install and no GPU needed.

VSR or VideoTextRemover: side by side

Both remove subtitles that are burned into the picture. They differ in where they run and what they ask of you.

VSR facts from its README on GitHub, checked 2026-10-18. We have not benchmarked the two against each other. Free monthly seconds are available to accounts created in the US, Canada, the UK, the EU/EEA, Switzerland, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Israel and the UAE, up to two accounts per network each month.

Choose VSR if

  • you have a recent GPU and are comfortable installing software;
  • your videos must stay on your own computer;
  • you process long videos often and want no per-second cost;
  • you want to script it or try different models.

Choose VideoTextRemover if

  • the VSR build does not match your GPU, or you have no GPU;
  • you are on a laptop, a Chromebook or a phone;
  • you only need a few clips, and 30 free seconds a month may cover them;
  • you would rather not manage Python, drivers and model files.

Which mode should I use?

Text that stays in one place: Select area. Captions that jump around the frame: Subtitles. Captions plus titles, labels or timestamps: All text. Every mode costs the same, 1 credit per second.

Select area

Removes
Everything inside the boxes you draw, text or not. The AI does not look for text; it repaints the whole box.
Boxes
Required, up to 6. Each is made 1.4 times as wide and as tall as you draw it, so no edge of a letter is left.
Best for
Text that stays in one place for the whole part, such as a subtitle band at the bottom or a title in a corner.
Watch out
A box covers the same spot in every frame, and anything else inside it, such as a face or a hand, is repainted too. Keep boxes as small as the text allows: large boxes give weaker results.

Subtitles

Removes
Subtitle and caption lines, found on their own in every frame.
Boxes
Not needed. You can limit the search to an area.
Best for
Film and series subtitles, and social captions that show up in a different place from one line to the next, as on TikTok or Reels.
Watch out
It looks for subtitle lines, so titles, labels or timestamps may be left in. Use All text when those should go too.

All text

Removes
Every word in the frame: subtitles and captions, plus titles, labels, timestamps and lower thirds.
Boxes
Not needed. You can limit the search to an area.
Best for
Clips with captions and other on-screen text to clear in one go, and large captions that pop up one or two words at a time.
Watch out
Text you want to keep, such as a brand name on a product, can go too. Turn on Limit to an area to keep it out.

Limit to an area, in Subtitles and All text

Turn it on and draw boxes, and the AI looks for text only inside them. Unlike Select area, nothing inside a box is touched unless it is text, and text outside the boxes stays. For example, to remove the subtitles at the bottom but keep a title at the top, choose Subtitles and draw one box over the bottom band.

When this is not the right tool

You want it free and unlimited

VSR costs nothing per video. If you have a capable GPU and the time to set it up, it is the cheaper choice for long or frequent jobs.

Your footage cannot leave your computer

VSR processes locally with no third-party API. VideoTextRemover uploads your video to the cloud (deleted after 7 days).

You need batches or scripting

VSR has a command line you can script. We process one video per task through the web page.

You want to choose the model

VSR lets you pick STTN, LaMa, ProPainter or OpenCV per job. We run one hosted model and do not expose that choice.

Pay for the seconds you process

One credit is one second of video. You choose the part of the video to process, and a task that fails costs nothing.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an online version of video-subtitle-remover?

Not an official one that we know of: VSR is a desktop project you download and run yourself. VideoTextRemover is a separate online tool that does the same kind of job, removing hardcoded subtitles, without installing anything.

Is VideoTextRemover based on video-subtitle-remover?

No. VideoTextRemover is not affiliated with the VSR project; it runs a hosted video model through our AI provider, so there is nothing to install or configure.

Is video-subtitle-remover free?

Yes: VSR is free and open source under the Apache-2.0 license. You pay with your own hardware and setup time instead.

Do I need a GPU to remove subtitles?

Not with VideoTextRemover, because processing happens in the cloud. VSR can run on a CPU, but its README offers separate builds for NVIDIA CUDA, DirectML and Apple Silicon, and notes that ProPainter needs a lot of video memory.

Which one gives better results?

We have not run a side-by-side quality test, so we do not claim either is better. Results depend on the footage and, for VSR, on the model you pick, so try both on the same 10-second clip.

Can either tool remove watermarks?

VSR's README says it also removes text-like watermarks. VideoTextRemover is built for text; its Select area mode erases whatever you box, but our Terms do not allow removing watermarks or logos that identify a video's owner.

Try it on your own video

The first 30 seconds are free every month. Upload a clip, pick the part with the text, and see the result.
