To remove subtitles from a video, first check whether they are soft or hardcoded: soft subtitles are a separate track you can switch off, while hardcoded subtitles are part of every frame and need an AI video subtitle remover to repaint them. This one runs online, free for 30 seconds a month: upload an MP4 or MOV, choose Subtitles mode (or draw a box over subtitles that stay in one place), and download the video without them.
Soft or hardcoded? Check in ten seconds
Only hardcoded subtitles need a subtitle remover. Soft ones can simply be switched off.
| Soft subtitles | Hardcoded subtitles | |
|---|---|---|
| Where they are | A separate track inside the file, or a .srt next to it | Drawn into the pixels of every frame |
| How to tell | The player has a subtitle menu, and Disable makes them disappear | They stay on screen with every subtitle track off |
| How to remove them | Turn them off, or drop the track (FFmpeg -sn) | Repaint the pixels with an AI subtitle remover |
| Quality afterwards | Untouched | Same resolution; the rebuilt area can look softer on busy backgrounds |
Remove subtitles from video online, free for 30 seconds a month
- Sign in with Google and 30 seconds are added every month.
- Pick any part of the video with the slider; only that part is processed and charged.
- The free seconds use the same model and quality as paid plans.
- A task that fails costs nothing.

Tips for a cleaner result
- Use Subtitles for dialogue lines; All text also clears titles and labels.
- For two-line or bilingual subtitles, box the whole subtitle band, larger than the text.
- Test a 10-second part with the busiest background before processing the whole video.
- Export at the resolution you want to keep: output matches the input, up to 1080p.
Which mode should I use?
Text that stays in one place: Select area. Captions that jump around the frame: Subtitles. Captions plus titles, labels or timestamps: All text. Every mode costs the same, 1 credit per second.
Select area
- Removes
- Everything inside the boxes you draw, text or not. The AI does not look for text; it repaints the whole box.
- Boxes
- Required, up to 6. Each is made 1.4 times as wide and as tall as you draw it, so no edge of a letter is left.
- Best for
- Text that stays in one place for the whole part, such as a subtitle band at the bottom or a title in a corner.
- Watch out
- A box covers the same spot in every frame, and anything else inside it, such as a face or a hand, is repainted too. Keep boxes as small as the text allows: large boxes give weaker results.
Subtitles
- Removes
- Subtitle and caption lines, found on their own in every frame.
- Boxes
- Not needed. You can limit the search to an area.
- Best for
- Film and series subtitles, and social captions that show up in a different place from one line to the next, as on TikTok or Reels.
- Watch out
- It looks for subtitle lines, so titles, labels or timestamps may be left in. Use All text when those should go too.
All text
- Removes
- Every word in the frame: subtitles and captions, plus titles, labels, timestamps and lower thirds.
- Boxes
- Not needed. You can limit the search to an area.
- Best for
- Clips with captions and other on-screen text to clear in one go, and large captions that pop up one or two words at a time.
- Watch out
- Text you want to keep, such as a brand name on a product, can go too. Turn on Limit to an area to keep it out.
Limit to an area, in Subtitles and All text
Turn it on and draw boxes, and the AI looks for text only inside them. Unlike Select area, nothing inside a box is touched unless it is text, and text outside the boxes stays. For example, to remove the subtitles at the bottom but keep a title at the top, choose Subtitles and draw one box over the bottom band.

Frequently asked questions
Can you remove subtitles from a video?
Yes: soft subtitles can be switched off in the player, and hardcoded subtitles can be removed with an AI subtitle remover that repaints the frame. Check which kind you have first, because soft subtitles need no processing at all.
How do I remove subtitles from a video online for free?
Sign in with Google to get 30 free seconds every month, upload the video, choose Subtitles mode and a part of up to 30 seconds. Longer parts are pay per second, about $0.030 per second on monthly plans, about $0.025 on yearly plans and about $0.033 to $0.040 with credit packs. Free monthly seconds are available to accounts created in the US, Canada, the UK, the EU/EEA, Switzerland, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Israel and the UAE, up to two accounts per network each month.
Can I remove subtitles from an MP4?
Yes: MP4 and MOV files of up to 500 MB and 10 minutes are supported, and the result is an MP4 at the same resolution, up to 1080p. If the MP4 has a soft subtitle track, removing the track with FFmpeg is faster and lossless.
Can my video editor remove subtitles?
Only if the subtitles are still a text layer in your project: delete the layer and export again. Once they are burned into an exported file, an editor can only crop, blur or cover them.
Does it remove Chinese, Korean or Japanese subtitles?
It looks for text in the picture rather than reading a particular language, so it is not limited to English subtitles. We have not measured accuracy for each writing system, so try a 10-second part first.
What if a subtitle line is missed?
Switch to Select area, draw a box over the subtitle band and run that part again: everything inside the box is erased, whether or not it was detected as text. Each box is made 40 percent larger than you draw it, because boxes cut tightly to the letters can come back unchanged.
Will removing subtitles reduce the video quality?
The video is re-encoded at the same resolution, up to 1080p, and the area behind the subtitles is rebuilt rather than blurred. On busy, fast-moving backgrounds the rebuilt area can look softer than the rest of the frame.
Try it on your own video
The first 30 seconds are free every month. Upload a clip, pick the part with the text, and see the result.
